Professional

James has been successfully engaging the most defended, therapy savvy, and treatment resistant individuals, along with their families, since 1999. He is recognized for his ability to create strong alliances with change resistant clients. His disarming authenticity and transparent approach allow him to build trusting alliances with both outwardly unwilling and reclusively avoidant individuals alike. In his counseling work, James employs experiential, relationship-based, interpersonal therapy approaches informed by family systems theory, motivational interviewing, third wave CBT, and mindfulness-based interventions. James began his career with a preeminent wilderness therapy program, where he spent over 11 years. He has designed and implemented substance use disorder programming for wilderness therapy programs, therapeutic boarding schools, and residential treatment centers. Evidence-based treatment and research has driven much of James’ philosophy in the work that he does, stemming back to his own graduate level research into the integration of evidence-based trauma and substance abuse treatments. James has served as a therapist with Utah Health and Human Rights, and designed and facilitated a men’s trauma group for Arabic speaking refugees who have survived torture and war trauma. James was the recipient of the Dr. Sharon Goodwill Memorial Award for Achievement and Promise in Mental Health from The University of Utah College of Social Work in 2014.

Personal

A Utah native, James has made several escapes from the state, yet the deserts and mountains always bring him back. In his spare time, he can be found taking in Salt Lake’s nearby offerings, hiking, biking, skiing, and backpacking in the big outside, reading up on therapeutic theories, appreciating live music, and enjoying his wonderful friends and family.

James personally employs the same mindfulness techniques that he teaches his clients, to keep his clinical work balanced with empathy, warmth, and structure. James’ professional interests are ever evolving and include contextual behavioral science, the intersection of the authentic, therapeutic relationship and healthy boundaries, the trauma informed lens of understanding behavior, and the mind-body connection in healing and change.
